Rice Cooker For Brown Rice
The Most Reliable Rice Cooker For Brown Rice Worth Buying
By FORD LEWIS Updated October 20, 2025
Ever wondered why brown rice seems so stubborn to cook? The answer lies in its grain’s layers. Unlike white rice, brown rice retains its outer bran and germ layers. These layers act like a protective layer around the grain making it difficult to absorb water. The slow absorption of water leads to longer cooking time.
Why it Is Harder to Cook Brown Rice on a stovetop
Cooking brown rice manually on the stovetop requires patience, precision, and practice. The correct amount of water-to-rice ratio is required, and even a slightest variations can lead to undercooked or overcooked rice. Since brown rice requires longer cooking time, there’s a higher chance of burning or sticking the rice to the bottom of the pot. Without proper monitoring, the rice can turn out to be hard, sticky, or even unevenly cooked.
How Rice Cooker simplifies the process of Cooking Brown Rice
Cooking brown rice is on a stovetop is bit of a gamble. It’s like juggling with too many steps, long waits, and constant checking. The end result, the rice is either too hard, too sticky, or unevenly cooked. Yet, brown rice remains one of the healthiest whole grains, packed with nutrients, fiber, and nutty flavor we all love.
So the question is how do we make it right every single time? The answer lies in a single appliance, a dedicated rice cooker especially designed to handle brown rice. Electric rice cookers provide precision and convenience. A dedicated brown rice setting adjusts cooking time and temperature automatically, ensuring even results.
Modern rice cookers don’t just boil rice, they use a combination of induction heating and fuzzy logic technology that uses temperature sensors and pressure control to manage even heat distribution inside the entire pot, ensuring uniformly cooked, fluffy grains.

Features that makes a Rice Cooker Ideal for Brown Rice
While selecting a rice cooker for brown rice, focus on another prominent feature: the GABA Mode. GABA setting not only perfects the texture but also boosts nutritional content of brown rice, no extra effort needed.
Dedicated brown rice setting ensures that the cooker understands the specific requirements of cooking brown rice and adjusts accordingly.
Modern rice cookers with a GABA setting creates a controlled environment that allows the brown rice to gently sprout, triggering the production of GABA naturally, resulting in a softer, fluffier rice with a pleasantly nutty aroma.
Brown rice retains its bran layer, which makes it healthier but also tougher to cook. Fuzzy logic rice cookers have built-in sensors that detects quality of the brown rice and modifies the cooking parameters accordingly. The result is soft, evenly cooked brown rice with perfect texture and taste.
Brown rice requires longer cooking and higher temperatures to soften its bran layer. Induction heating ensures steady and consistent heat distribution throughout the entire pot, allowing uniform absorption of water for perfect texture. This results in better control over the cooking process, preventing the rice from burning or sticking to the pot.

For small households, dorm rooms, or apartments, the Zojirushi NS-LGC05 is the perfect fit. With a 3-cup (uncooked) capacity, it is compact enough to save counter space yet big enough to prepare meals for one to three people. Despite its small size, it does not skip on performance. Its triple heating system bottom, side, and lid ensures uniform heat distribution.
While many compact rice cookers compromise on features, the NS-LGC05 includes Zojirushi’s fuzzy logic technology, found in larger Zojirushi models. When cooking brown or GABA rice, fuzzy logic ensures that the rice gets the exact amount of soaking, heating, and steaming time it needs. The result? Perfectly fluffy brown rice and nutrient-rich GABA rice, every single time.
The NS-LGC05 is more than just a rice cooker. It is a multifunctional appliance with dedicated settings for white rice, brown rice, GABA rice, sushi rice, long-grain white rice, steel-cut oatmeal, and quick-cooking modes. This makes it perfect for anyone who wants versatility in their diet.
Why Zojirushi NS-LGC05 is Ideal for Brown Rice
Cooking brown rice isn’t the same as making white rice. Brown rice retains its outer bran layer, thus require longer cooking times and precise temperature control to unlock their full nutritional potential. Most regular rice cookers apply the same settings for every rice type. That’s why brown rice often turns out too chewy or unevenly cooked.
The NS-LGC05, however, has a dedicated brown rice mode that uses Zojirushi’s advance fuzzy logic technology, allowing it to “think” and automatically extends soaking and steaming periods to adjust the heat and cooking time to soften the bran layer.
Why Zojirushi NS-LGC05 is Ideal for GABA Rice
The NS-LGC05 includes a dedicated GABA rice mode that keeps the rice warm at about 104°F (40°C) for up to a certain period of time, before cooking. This gentle warmth triggers germination, boosting the GABA levels without compromising taste or texture.
To achieve these levels, Zojirushi NS-LGC05 uses its advanced fuzzy logic technology to adjust heat and cooking time. This ensures that the rice gets the exact amount of soaking, heating, and steaming time it needs.
The result, the cooked GABA rice turns out slightly softer and sweeter than brown rice. A comforting balance between nutrition and flavor that many health-conscious families love.
How we selected
Cooking brown rice can often feel like a challenge. Unlike white rice, brown rice has a fibrous, tougher outer bran layer that requires more water and longer cooking times, making it harder to cook evenly. Many people struggle to cook brown rice in a rice cooker and end up making it either mushy or hard.
Here at Rice Hub, to test this, we randomly selected a brown rice of a top brand and followed the following steps:
Rinse the rice: 1 cup of brown basmati rice is rinsed using fine mesh strainer over a large bowl. This is done to remove the excessive starch on the rice bran. We repeated this process until the water in the bowl ran clear.
The rice cooker: We added the rinsed rice along with two cups of water, as instructed on the pot, in the rice cooker.
The Final Result: We followed the instructed instructions of the cooker and pressed the dedicated brown rice setting. After the rice cooked, we noted the time each rice cooker took, along with the output texture of the cooked brown rice.
What to Look for in a Rice Cooker: for GABA and brown rice
Firstly, choosing the right rice cooker for GABA and brown rice is more than just a matter of convenience, it is about achieving perfect texture, flavor, and nutrition. Features like Fuzzy Logic technology, Induction Heating, pressure cooking, and dedicated GABA/brown rice modes work together to create consistent and delicious results.
Secondly, choosing the right rice cooker for brown rice and gaba rice, should also match your lifestyle. One should focus on features such as adjustable timers, a durable inner pot, and easy maintenance options. With the right rice cooker, one can enjoy the full nutritional benefits of GABA and brown rice effortlessly, transforming their daily meals into wholesome, flavorful experiences.
Faster Cooking Advance Features: Cuckoo CRP-P1009SB
What we liked: The testers at RiceHub praises Cuckoo CRP-P1009SB for its high-capacity design and smart cooking technology. With 13 menu settings, Voice guide and pressure mode, this powerhouse can handle large batches (10 cups uncooked (20 cups cooked)) without compromising on taste.
During testing it was found that the high-pressure cooking effectively breaks down the tough outer bran layer that makes brown rice and reduces the cooking time to 25-35 minutes. The dedicated pressure GABA setting helps activate GABA nutrients more effectively than standard methods. The keep-warm function keeps everything at the perfect temperature without overcooking it. Its auto clean function and dishwasher safe inner pot make cleanup a breeze too.
What we didn’t like: The testers at RiceHub ran this rice cooker through multiple tests. The first thing we noticed, as soon as we pluged in, was voice navigation which is by default set in Korean. It took us a while to turn it off, since the instruction manual is unclear and hard to understand. Especially changing the instruction language from Korean to English was tricky. Also the memory is volatile. Meaning that when you unplug it and plug it again after a few moment, the setting goes back to Korean language, which is irritating.
Second. For some the multi menu settings can be confusing. Since Cuckoo rice cookers are known to be tech savvy, the menu settings is not that straight forward. The selections of what type of rice it can cook can be confusing for some. So f some wants the rice cooker to cook rice fluffy and tender without getting into complexity, this is not the rice cooker for you.
Thirdly, the size. For some this rice cooker can be too big for its capacity since it takes up a lot of counter space.
For Premium Perfection: Zojirushi NP-HCC10XH
What we liked: Zojirushi NP-HCC10 is renowned for its induction heating and fuzzy logic technology. Making it perfect for delivering brown and GABA rice with minimal effort. During testing at RiceHub the rice cooker was tested for multiple setting, especially for brown rice and GABA rice.
The brown rice setting on the Zojirushi works like a charm. We cooked brown basmati rice using the dedicated brown rice settings. Once we selected our cooking program, the internal scale weighed the rice and gave an estimated cook time. It produced perfectly moist, fluffy brown rice in 90 minutes on regular brown rice setting.
To make healthier brown rice, it has a separate GABA settings. The GABA brown rice setting makes a nuttier and soft textured rice without making it mushy. The aroma is amazing.
As soon as the rice is done, the keep warm setting kicks on. The keep-warm function is reliable, maintaining rice quality for hours. The digital display starts the count which is a very helpful feature. The Extended Keep Warm is a clever feature, it lowers the temperature slightly so the rice doesn’t scorch or dry out over time. This rice cooker is easy to clean, thanks to a ceramic cookpot and removable inner lid.
What we didn’t like: The testers at RiceHub ran this rice cooker through multiple tests. First thing that was noticeable was its power cord. It does not have a retractable power cord. The LED clock that only work in 24 hours display format and not in the normal 12 hours AM/PM setup
It takes almost 90 minutes to cook brown rice, which way too much. The quickest setting takes 40 minutes to cook the rice.
Multi-Functional Meal Prep: Tiger JAX-T10U-K
What we liked: Testing the Tiger JAX-T10U-K Micom Rice Cooker, at RiceHub has been a delight, as it turned out to be an incredibly versatile kitchen appliance. The customizable menu settings for cooking time and temperature makes this rice cooker a little powerhouse that can slow cook, steam, and perform a unique synchro-cooking function “tacook.”
The JAX-T10U-K has a dedicated Brown rice mode that makes brown rice preparation easy as it provides more precise temperature control. The brown rice turns out to be fluffy and nuttier, but takes longer to cook. We think it is common with all the Japanese rice cookers. The “Quick” mode made rice twice as fast as any other rice cooker.
With tacook function, you can cook two dishes simultaneously, saving time and hassle. We steamed vegetables on the top section at the same time with brown rice. With the press of a button, Tiger’s automatic cooking logic system actively monitors cooking temperatures to create the perfect meal. Unlike other rice cookers, Tiger’s cooking plate is specially designed so the flavors from the cooking plate does not affect the flavor or texture of the rice.
What we didn’t like: Testing Tiger JAX-T10U-K, at RiceHub, shows how tiger’s Micom technology efficiently handles 10 menu functions and produces consistent results. But since no product is perfect, here is where this model did not shine bright: lack of GABA rice setting which should be there with brown rice.
Compact And Reliability: Zojirushi NS-LGC05
What we liked: Zojirushi NS-LGC05 Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker is a perfect size for a couple. Its compact size offers small footprint making it perfect for my small countertop.
The testers at RiceHub were amazed by its small size, yet it offered a variety of cooking functions that cater to diverse culinary needs. Operations are simple and intuitive and build quality is strong. They also love the retractable cord. The control panel has a battery in it so it remembers custom settings and the clock stays set even when it is unplugged.
The tester at Rice Hub cooked brown basmati rice using the dedicated brown rice settings. Brown Rice came out perfectly fluffy, with no burns at the bottom. Brown rice took about 95 minutes, while the “Quick” cooking mode took 40 min. But the original setting makes rice perfectly fluffy and tender.
The GABA setting is a game changer. The gaba setting makes brown rice even healthier. After rice gets cooked, the keep warm setting auto kicks in. Even if you leave the rice setting on for a while, cooked rice never sticks to the pot and never gets any burns. It has an alarm that alerts when the grain are cooked.
The detachable and washable inner lid, along with the nonstick inner cooking pan, simplifies the cleaning process, thus making it easy to clean.
What we didn’t like: At RiceHub, after running this rice cooker through multiple tests, it was found that it takes almost 1 hour to cook white rice and nearly 2 hours to cook brown rice. The GABA settings extend the time to 3 hours +, which can be hectic for someone with busy lifestyle. Other than that, this cooker may feel a bit more expensive than the basic rice cookers, but the quality and features justify the investment.
Why Choose a Rice Cooker for Brown Rice?
Brown rice has a tougher outer bran layer, requiring longer cooking times. The dedicated Brown Rice mode soaks, steams, and cooks grains perfectly to achieve a soft, chewy texture without losing nutrients. A dedicated Brown rice settings provide:
Consistency with Every Batch
Brown rice requires accuracy. Cooking it on a stovetop often leads to inconsistent results because maintaining the exact heat and timing is tricky. A rice cooker removes this guesswork.
Time, Efficiency and Convenience
Cooking brown rice on a stovetop requires constant monitoring. You have to check the flame, stir occasionally to avoid sticking to the bottom and getting burnt.
A rice cooker, takes away the monitoring process and provides hands-free cooking experience. With a rice cooker, you just measure, press start, and let the cooker do its thing, while you focus on other tasks.
Health and Nutrition Preserved
Brown rice is naturally high in fiber, magnesium, selenium, and antioxidants. Nutrients are often lost in high-heat cooking. A rice cooker maintains steady, moderate temperatures, preventing nutrient breakdown.
Improves Flavor and Texture
Stovetop cooking makes brown rice taste bland and dry. A rice cooker locks in the moisture and steams the rice gently, making every grains fluffy and chewy, and enhances its nutty aromatic flavor.
Benefits of Cooking Brown Rice with GABA Setting
For people serious about health and nutrition, the GABA setting is a feature worth investing in. While the process requires a bit more time, the payoff is significant: higher nutrient absorption, superior taste, and improved well-being. It transforms brown rice from a simple side dish into a functional food that nourishes both body and mind. The Dedicated GABA rice settings provides:
Enhanced Nutritional Value
Using the GABA setting increases the rice’s amino acid content, particularly GABA, which can rise up higher compared to regular brown rice. Additionally, germination helps to break down phytic acid, an anti-nutrient that limits the absorption of minerals like iron and zinc. The result is a rice that is not only more nutritious but also more bioavailable.
Improved Texture and Flavor
Traditional brown rice can sometimes taste chewy or dry. The GABA setting softens the bran layer during the warm soaking process, producing a tender, slightly nutty, and aromatic grain. It’s a delightful balance of softness and bite, ideal for everyday meals.
Better Digestibility
The controlled germination process partially breaks down complex carbohydrates and proteins, making GABA rice easier to digest than standard brown rice. This makes it especially suitable for individuals with sensitive digestive systems.
